Smile! It's good for you

"A warm smile is the universal language of kindness."

- William Arthur Ward

There is something about a smile, whether given or received, that positively affects everyone involved. Smiling is a great way to spread cheer and brighten up everyone's day. We all know that. Smiling also elevates our moods and helps us to live longer. We also reduce our stress levels and strengthen our immune systems, lowering our blood pressure and reducing the risk of heart disease, all from the simple act of smiling. Smiling is also a great reminder that, even when life gets tough, there is always something to be grateful for. Smiling is the appreciation we express toward life and each other.

Smiling is much easier to do when life seems to be going swimmingly. It's tougher to do when we experience turbulence and life attempts to steal our smile from us. We end up learning as we get older that life will always be looking for ways to deny us the satisfaction of smiling. There are plenty of emojis to express the discontent we experience when interacting with life and other people. To improve our own quality of life, we can look to balance our discontent with reasons to smile while appreciating life and each other.

We can always find reasons to be angry or upset whether we are scrolling through our phone or strolling down the street. We can also find reasons to smile. They are just harder to find sometimes. With the right attitude, we end up finding more reasons to smile with less effort. It can be as simple as telling ourselves when we wake up in the morning, "I am going to find more reasons to smile today." It's up to us to determine what our mood for the day will be. Every day. We choose whether or not it's going to be a good day based on how we choose to respond to it. The more we choose to smile, the better day we are going to have.

So, what makes you smile? What are some ways you can squeeze more smiles in your days?

Science tells us that the simple act of smiling improves our mood. Besides keeping us in a good mood, it even improves the moods of the people around us. It's one of the easiest ways to brighten up a room and even gives us a positive boost. We have that power. It's a simple and effortless way to spread a little positivity while receiving all of the benefits smiling offers. All the more reason to smile more often. 😊
